I appear to have just run 7.28 miles at a rate of roughly 13 minutes per mile (~1 hr 35 minutes). As has been the case with these longer runs I've been doing, I actually felt really good right up until the end. What was new this time is that one of the reasons I stopped was that I was getting really hungry. I normally eat a Clif bar at around 9 am and then go for my run between 10 and 11. Often times, on shorter runs, this will slip to 11 to 12 and on rare occasions some time between 12 to 1. The general idea is that I want the Clif bar to digest, but still provide me energy for the run. Today I started around 11:45, which is a bit on the late side, and like I said I ran for over an hour and a half, so that Clif bar was long gone.

I'm wondering now if I need to either start these longer runs earlier or start bringing some sort of fuel source and water with me. I'm leaning on starting earlier, but it's always a pain to drag my butt out from behind the computer and actually get a move on. Also, some of the sites I've been looking at recommend eating something on any run longer than 90 minutes. As far as fuel sources, I'm leaning towards the Jelly Belly Sport Beans. The gels get all over your hands, and the shot bloks are pretty sticky too. And I just know that having sticky hands is the kind of thing I'd obsess on over the course of a race.

The problem is water. During a race it's no problem since they give out water at various points (and I won't have to worry about it until I start doing half marathons--10ks are too short). I don't want to carry extra weight or a sloshing bottle around and I've already got the chest strap for my heart rate monitor on, so a camel back would be just too geeky. It may be the solution, though. Maybe I'll get one of the heart rate monitor watches that doesn't have a chest strap.

Fortunately, I'm now discovering that the people who make Clif bars also own a winery. I wonder if drinking a bottle of their Zin will replenish lost electrolytes. Clearly some experimentation is in order. Later. Right now I'm going to collapse for a bit. If I keep this up, I better get thin pretty damn pronto.
